The SVD, or Snayperskaya Vintovka Dregalnaya, is classified as a Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) because it fills a different role within military operations compared to traditional sniper rifles. While sniper rifles are typically built with the primary goal of precise long-range shooting by trained snipers, DMRs like the SVD are designed to be used by designated marksmen who are part of an infantry squad. These marksmen are trained to engage targets at ranges that are beyond the effective range of standard infantry weapons, but still within moderately long distances.

The SVD incorporates semi-automatic fire, which allows for faster follow-up shots, and it is intended for use in a more dynamic combat environment than a traditional sniper rifle. The DMR role emphasizes engaging targets effectively while still being integrated into the squad's tactics, rather than existing solely for the purpose of long-range precision shooting typical of sniper missions. This distinction is crucial in understanding the operational use and classification of the SVD.
